What Causes Jetlag?
The cause of jetlag is the inability of our internal body-rythm to immediately adjust to a different time zone, a different sleep-work rhythm.
Our body develops a natural sleep-wake cycle that is tied to the rhythm of light and dark in our environment.
This cycle, called the Circadian Rhythm, affects many body processes including temperature and hormone levels
Which flights are affected?
Only flights in east-west or west-east direction, crossing time zones, cause jetlag.
Flights in North-South or South-North directions, not crossing a time zone, will not cause jetlag even if it lasts several hours.

What causes Jetlag?
Symptoms of Jetlag
The effects of jetlag go beyond just being a little bit tired. Substantial body processes are thrown off balance.
Beyond being sleepy during the day and fully awake in the middle of the night, symptoms include fatigue, loss of appetite, constipation and diarrhea, headaches, nausea, irritability and bad mood.
Recovery from Jetlag
The time our system needs to adjust to the new conditions has to be measured in days, rather than hours.
Experience of many travellers tells that typically adjustment to a different time zone takes one day per hour time difference between the origin and destination of the flight.
Attention - Decisions - Judgement
We are likely to be unmotivated with poor attention and lack of energy. Decision making, judgement and reaction will be impacted by jetlag.
Jetlag may bring security risks, accidents and incidents caused by poor decision making and poor judgement have been reported.
Our sense of body temperature and body temperature regulation may also be off.
Recovery Time and Strategies
A healthy person tends to recover faster from jetlag.
Fexibility facilitates jetlag recovery.
The secret of Jetlag recovery is working with the body-mind system rather than against it.
Understanding is the key!
